Clermont’s most well-known resident, Chancellor Robert R. Livingston famously helped draft the Declaration of Independence. In addition to the Livingstons, enslaved people, indigenous peoples, tenant farmers, and paid servants also lived at Clermont. With sweeping panoramic views of the Hudson River Valley and Catskill Mountains, Clermont is perfect for picnicking and watching the sunset. Five miles of hiking trails are spread out on the 500-acre property.

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees more than 250 individual parks, historic sites, recreational trails, and boat launches, which were visited by a record 84.1 million people in 2023.
