A Hudson Valley Reckoning: Discovering the Forgotten History of Slaveholding in My Dutch American Family
by Debra Bruno
Last fall, we were fortunate to have Debra Bruno and Eleanor Mire come to Clermont State Historic Site
to share the story of their families. A Hudson Valley Reckoning tells the long-ignored story of slavery's history in upstate New York through Debra Bruno's absorbing chronicle that uncovers her Dutch ancestors' slave-holding past and leads to a deep connection with the descendants of the enslaved people her family owned. Bruno's book, A Hudson Valley Reckoning, came out this fall and is available at Oblong Books.
The Hudson Valley in the Ice Age: A Geological History & Tour
by Robert and Johanna Titus
Written for a general audience, this illustrated history of the Ice Age in New York State's Hudson River Valley takes the reader on a tour of the valley from Manhattan to north of Albany, pointing out along the way the effects the Ice Age had on the region and places where those effects are still visible today, helping the reader visualize what the various stages of the Ice Age — from advance, to retreat, and eventual melting — would have looked like in various areas from the mouth of the Hudson River in today's New York City harbor to the dunes of Albany's Pine Bush Preserve. This book is available at Oblong Books.
Metal prints
by Ruby Silvious
We're fortunate that internationally-recognized tea bag artist Ruby Silvious shared her stunning artwork at our Tea at Clermont Gardens the past couple of years. Several of the pieces she brought with her are available as 6" x 6" metal prints. You can find some of her collection on her website, along with her contact information if you're interested in a piece not shown online. If you can't narrow it down, she also has two books featuring her artwork. How about pairing a print or a book with her online course for an even more original gift?
