Carolynn started volunteering in our gardens last spring. After retiring in April 2025, she began looking for volunteering opportunities when she came across our garden volunteer program. Under the guidance of horticulturist Mary Hughes, Carolynn helps to maintain the Walled Garden. Carolynn is also a member of our Advisory Council, a committee that plays a vital role in guiding our mission and the future of the Friends of Clermont.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

Volunteering allows me to do something productive while also helping with the mission to preserve Clermont and to share my love for gardening and history with others. It’s very rewarding to see the results of our hard work when beautifying the gardens, which has only become more rewarding after learning more about the history of Clermont.
What kind of volunteer work do you typically do, and what does a typical day look like for you?
I volunteer one afternoon per week in the spring, summer, and fall under the guidance of horticulturist Mary Hughes. Garden work will vary from season to season, but I typically make sure all the plants in the Walled Garden are watered and cared for. Occasionally, I volunteer for other events on-site, where I am able to meet more of the community and learn more about the Livingston family history and Clermont’s historical significance.
What do you think more people should know about volunteering at Clermont?
Volunteering in the garden program is a lot of fun, especially if you can choose a project or activity that appeals to you. Enjoy your time outdoors, and don’t be afraid to ask questions! The staff is always personable and helpful. It is my hope that the volunteer program continues to attract community members. I am looking forward to getting back out in the gardens this spring!
