Board Spotlight: Kokese Ballou

Board Vice President Kokese Ballou first became acquainted with Clermont through former co-worker and current Friends of Clermont Executive Director, Randy Tryon. She volunteered for many years at the Friends’ Holiday Candlelight Evening event and remembers the first time she visited Clermont: “as soon as I came onto the [Clermont] property, it was gorgeous and knew it was something special.” She saw the camaraderie amongst the board and knew she had to get involved on a deeper level. Recently, Kokese was elected as the vice president of the board.

On a professional note:

What unique perspective do you think you bring to the board?

I tend to approach everything from an inclusion and belonging lens. I think about how people take in and process information, which is dependent on their life experiences. For example, when someone joins our board, a monetary contribution is required. However, there may be someone who wants to join our board who is unable to make such a substantial contribution. I suggested that there be other avenues a board member may take in lieu of a lump sum, such as taking sponsorship opportunities throughout the year. This keeps the board open to all.

What have been some of the most memorable experiences you’ve had while serving on the board?

Every time we get together is memorable; everyone is down-to-earth, nice, and cultured. My favorite event is the Chancellor’s Dinner. Not only do you get to know other members, but you get to enjoy good food with good company.

What do you think is the most important responsibility of a board member?

I think board members need to be open and flexible. We need to be open to hearing all sides of an issue or idea. At Clermont, this includes the state’s perspective, the Friends’ perspective, our members’ perspective, and the public’s perspective.

What are some key goals you hope to achieve during your time on the board?

Even though I was only recently elected Vice President, I have been on the financial and the advancement committees. I want us to be good stewards of our finances, to ensure that we have funds to remain as stable as possible, especially since the future is always uncertain. I also hope to see more opportunities for more people to come and experience Clermont, whether through adding more programs or creating bonds with community partners. We want Clermont to be open and accessible to all. We are planning to make the site more handicapped accessible, and we hope to add more trail signage.

How has being a part of the board impacted you professionally?

It has given me a greater vision on how I interact with other boards. I am also on the board of my local YWCA, and I have family members who serve on boards. Our board is so open with one another, but not all boards are like that. I find myself having more board-oriented conversations with others and giving examples on what has worked for our board.

What do you find most fulfilling about serving on our board?

Being a part of the community and seeing the advancement at Clermont in recent years. During COVID, like a lot of sites, there was a downturn of attendance and events, but we have been able to not only increase visitor attendance in recent years but also increase the number of programs and events that we offer. Clermont is a place of community, and it’s nice to welcome the community back to the site.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining a board for the first time?

Being on a board for the first time can bring a little bit of anxiety about new responsibilities, especially if it’s a place that you really love and care about dearly. Be willing to listen and be flexible. I treat my responsibilities as an extension of my home: I make financial decisions, and there is a social aspect too.

On a personal note:

Who are your top 3 favorite musicians?

It’s hard to pick just three! I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, so I listen to a lot of Jon Bon Jovi, TuPac, Miriah Carey, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Mary J. Blige.

What is your favorite vacation destination and why?

I have two. The first is St. Martin. My sister and I went on a trip a few years ago, and everyone was so welcoming. I have lasting friendships from that trip. The second is Paris. We recently went in January, and it’s beautiful. I got engaged there. I love the culture, and it’s one of those places that I could see myself living in one day.

What is one of the most interesting facts about you- one that most people wouldn’t know?

Even though I’m a people-person, I get very nervous right before meeting someone. Sometimes, I’ll sit in the car for a few minutes before going inside.
