About the Event
We all associate carving pumpkins with Halloween, but did you know that before pumpkins became affiliated with Halloween it was custom to carve turnips and other root vegetables into jack-o'-lanterns? Join us in carving both pumpkins and turnips while exploring the history of this beloved Halloween tradition. We’ll provide all of the materials needed to get crafty and creepy as we cover everything from how the Maori people of New Zealand would carve gourds over 700 years ago, to the spooky Irish legend of Stingy Jack. Be sure to turnip for this one!Â
Please note: This is a family program, so children must be accompanied by an adult and adults must be accompanied by a child. Unvaccinated visitors should wear a face covering when unable to maintain social distance outdoors. There is no charge for the event, but visitors must register in advance.
