The Friends of Clermont was founded by community leaders to support and
supplement the historic preservation and public education programs at Clermont
State Historic Site. The Friends of Clermont was incorporated in 1977 as
a non-profit educational corporation by the New York State Education Department,
Board of Regents. In order to carry out its mission at Clermont, the Friends
of Clermont encourages volunteerism and raises funds through membership
dues, grants, fundraising events, corporate sponsorships and donations.
Since 1977 the Friends of Clermont has developed the site's growing
research library, restored three formal gardens, restored the circa 1910
Children's Playhouse, mounted two important loan exhibitions, and encouraged
the donation of nearly 8,000 historical objects to Clermont's collections.
The Friends, with grant support, helped develop the museum's school outreach
program, and Friends annually support more than two dozen special interpretive
events and educational activities. The Friends also raised funds to match
a $25,000 grant from State Parks Commissioner Bernadette Castro for the
restoration of the stone wall surrounding Alice Delafield Clarkson Livingston’s
Walled Garden. Presently the Friends are focused on rehabilitating the
former gardener’s residence, Clermont Cottage, for use as administrative
offices and an expanded Henry H. Livingston Research Library. Phase I,
structural stabilization, of the project was successfully completed in
2004. The Friends are anticipating the beginning of Phase II, exterior
restoration, in summer of 2005. Another exciting beginning is preparations
for the Livingston/Fulton Steamboat Bicentennial in 2007; a symposium
with nearby Bard College is planned, as well as an extensive traveling
exhibition!
